MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bob Renggli Core Competency #7: Direct Communication
Fantastic communication skills, expertly deployed, are the band-width and the conduit through which passes the meat and potatoes of the coaching practice. Its just not the quantity of information but the quality and laser-like impact of the communication itself that makes the significant difference in a coaching engagement. The legacy one leaves years later will indeed be measured by the "quality" of one's communication.
This month in July, our NW Coaches synchronized Leadership Team will focus on tips, tools and techniques of the Direct Communication competency itself. In the ACC exam, if a coach frequently communicates with a client in a convoluted, meandering, or circuitous manner, he or she is simply not correctly practicing the "art" and the "science" of professional coaching.
Yes, our performance goals, expectations and standards are high, and yet as our emerging profession stretches for excellence, a shabby demonstration of communication neither serves the client well nor the high esteem in which we hold our noble calling as coaches. Does this measurable skill take practice and patience to perfect? By all means! But help is nearby in the peer support of a dynamic Chapter and in the abundant Coach Training Academies and Institutions who have mastered this craft of communications themselves and stand eager and ready to share their secrets of success with others.
On the matter of the global ICF membership perks, for the outrageously abundant value of $195.00 per year starting in June 08, as your Chapter President, I highly recommend the investment. Personally, I often dial into the many free ICF webinars, teleconferences, on- line community sessions and blogs to enrich my practice with fresh tips, tools and trends of our dynamic industry of coaching. And finally, there are now more than 35 thriving SIGS (Special Interest Groups) to join, but one must first be an ICF member. If you have been a member and your dues expired, please consider rejoining. If you are a new or exploring coach there is a treasure-trove of career guidance and industry wisdom exhibited at www.coachfederation.org. Check it out and prepare to be amazed and enriched by that bubbling fountain of coaching insights and worldwide happenings.
Bob Renggli
NWCA 2008 President
MESSAGE FROM THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Untangling the Alphabet Soup of Coach Training to Prepare for the Rewards and Challenges of the Coaching Profession
Within the quickly emerging and developing coaching profession, there are a variety of options to gain the necessary foundation for success in the coaching profession. This article will clarify three major designations of coach training approved by the ICF and the alphabet soup of initials that go with them! ICF accredited programs submit to review and continuing oversight to demonstrate their commitment to the highest standards for curricula, the ICF defined core competencies, faculty, structure, proficiency, and ethics to support excellence in the training of coaches.
Look for our article in next month's issue to learn more about other ICF recommendations that will help you both before beginning your business as a coach and later by furthering your skills and competencies to compete successfully as a professional coach in the expanding coaching industry.
ICF Accredited Coach Training Programs (ACTP)
Each Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP) offers:
-A minimum of 125 hours of coach-specific training.
-A minimum of 6 observed-coaching sessions with an experienced coach.
-A comprehensive final exam that evaluates a student's coaching competency.
-Certified graduates the opportunity to apply for an ICF credential using the ACC, PCC or MCC ACTP graduate application.
-ICF Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH)
Organizations that offer Approved Coach Specific Training Hours offer:
-At least 30 hours that are ICF approved as coach- specific training.
-Students the opportunity to use pre-approved training hours for an ACC, PCC or MCC Portfolio application. Graduates of ACSTH programs must apply for ICF credentials using the portfolio application rather than the ACTP graduate application. Applicants with ACSTH training MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE APPLICABLE ICF EXAM BEFORE RECEIVING THEIR CREDENTIAL.
Please Note: ACTP programs are also by default ACSTH programs. This means that students may take portions of an ACTP program and apply this training toward an ICF credential. However, if a student does not complete the full ACTP program (including final exam) they must apply for a credential using the Portfolio Application.
ICF Approved Programs for Continuing Coach Education (CCE)
Continuing Coach Education (CCE) courses are advanced or niche-specific courses that can be used to:
-Further the on-going development of the professional coach.
-Satisfy coach-specific training requirements for coaches pursuing an ICF credential.
-Satisfy the renewal requirements for credentialed coaches renewing their PCC or MCC credentials.
Please Note: In addition to courses approved specifically as CCE courses, continuing education credits can also be obtained from the accredited programs of ACTP or ACSTH providers.
Your Education Committee,
Deborah Reedal Munhoz, PCC
Susan McKay, MCC
